Wet weather, at last:
After May with its very dry weather, and just a few damp days, we’re very glad to have a wet first week in June.
Although the wet damages some of the flowering plants it provides much refreshment to the garden and fills the water butts. We think that we’re now ready for anything the summer sends.
As the month progresses the weather becomes drier and we experience the next heatwave.
Vegetables and fruit:
We’re still relying on the supermarket for lettuce as every attempt to grow our own just feeds the slugs and snails. In despair I try growing a couple of trays in the greenhouse to raise plugs that I can plant out in the raised bed.
I need to get a sowing of leaf beet (perpetual spinach) in otherwise we won’t have fresh leaves during the autumn and winter. Sadly I fail to do this before the soil dries out and we’re going to miss out on this crop for the first time in many years.
The tomatoes are growing well in both the greenhouse and the raised beds. We’re starting to get cucumbers, our peppers are growing well and the Christmas Cacti cuttings are starting to sprout.
Elsewhere in the garden:
The oxeye daisies in the front lawn love the rain but are quickly over in the heat of the latter part of the month. The flowers don’t last in the very hot weather but the plants seem to survive.
